Ys Seven – First Blood

9 November 2009 One Comment

I spent the last two weeks playing Ys Seven, and I considered this as the best Ys ever made until now.

Ys Seven gives us lots of new features, like weapon skills, extra skills, a total of 7 party members, and item synthesis. Fighting boss battles is also fun, especially the epic fight against Rada=Manju, the earth dragon. Being chased from the rear while fighting him is just downright epic. Though I can’t imagine how hard would it be if I fight those bosses in Nightmare mode. It would be bloodbath. In order to survive in Nightmare mode, one would need to master the protect/defend techniques. By defending, not only you would not receive any damage at all, but also refills the SP gauge. Pressing L button while holding R button would invoke this technique, but it’s only effective for a moment, and if you screwed the timing, you would received twice as much damage. Against consecutive combo attacks or beam attacks, you need to activate the defense system each time, making this technique is the hardest to master.

Oh, don’t forget about the biggest reason why you need to play this title..

For those waiting on a PC port, I suggest that you start to give it up. I sense that Falcom is starting to shift their platform from PC to handheld and console, since it’s getting less popular playing hack-and-slash rpg on PC, and going to handheld and console means new market, which is more profitable for them.

I know some people try to promote this to Atlus in order to translate this title to English, and I hope they succeed in doing so. Once it’s done, maybe it would be more easy to persuade them to translate the Sora no Kiseki series too. One man can hope and pray, no?

Actually, it turns out Falcom is currently trying to find a way to get Ys 7 for PC to publish. Seems like some issue with their current publisher but there is still hope. I would LOVE to see some company localize the series without screwing it up.
