Reverse Adaptation on Eroge
It’s been quite a while since my last post, no? Enjoy while it’s still hot.
It’s not like I’m suspending this blog or anything, but I just can’t find the time or drive to write anything. I’ve been thinking of changing the writing style for reviews and other things for improvements, but if I were to pick two of three from working, playing games, and writing post, I’ll be sure to pick the former two. You guys who were still in school or college should be thankful for all those idle leisure time and use it wisely. Once you got yourself in workforce, you can hardly find time to do this kind of guilty pleasure. The reason I’m giving this kind of preach is because I’m going to be completely gone from the internet for about ten days. Yes, completely. You won’t find me lurking in the channel, posting twitter or comment on someone’s post. And I wouldn’t be there for June release, now this is serious problem. So rather than giving the wrong idea, it would be better for me to say it in this post. OK, enough for the introductory part, let’s get into the main dish.
I’m sure that the majority of you already knows that GIGA is pulling a new approach (If it’s not new, blame it on my poor memory and attention span) by making an eroge (I’ll call it VN for the sake universality from this point on) from a Jinki/Jinki Extend manga/anime material titled Jinki Extend Re:Vision, officially. By ‘officially’, I mean that it’s not a ripoff or an ugly form of パクリ, but it’s under the direct supervision of the original author, Tsunashima Shirou, of course with some new factors being included in, like new protagonist, new heroines and other new features.
So where is the importance of this new approach made by GIGA? I’m sure that many of us cringe over anime adaptation of VNs. Bad directing, rushed pacing, and many other. The biggest determining factor in this fiasco is the world’s greatest enemies, Time and Money. From the time factor, N-Cour system is the poison of anime industries. People don’t need to be genius to know that converting an VN story into cour system is bound to fail, horribly. Important small bits got cut, long silent scenes and ridiculous fillers added, or “ENJOY YOUR NORMAL ENDING WHERE NOTHING HAPPENS”. On the other hand, money factor also pays contribution into the ‘lacking feeling’ into the animated series, namely fund and sponsors. Coming from the ‘darker side’ of the world, VN is not something for the ‘not so dark side’ of the world to be given a ‘warm welcome’. Every time the sound of “This program is presented by..” is followed with a silence, it pains me a little. There’s little to no chance that without adequate funding, an anime adaptation of VN would be successful. There is another unstable factor which would determine the quality, which is creativity. In order to compensate the lack in the previous two factor, sometimes the production studio use their creativity to make the ends meet. But maybe in some out-of-desperation event, they put some out-of-this-world creativity which would make the story goes off tangent from the original source, leaving us with a huge question mark in our faces.
Now with GIGA’s new move, maybe a new revolution will be made. I’m pretty sure that we have a lot of experience with “What would happen if he do this or that instead?”, “Why wouldn’t he choose this girl instead of her?”, or some other similar questions and desires in our minds while reading a manga or watching an anime. All those desires are possible in VN format. There is no stupid limitation like “an VN is only possible in a x*12*24 minutes format”. Though money always talks, just not as loud.

So I will give a warm welcome to this approach of adaptation, and hope that they would not screw it over, considering that the most part of Jinki Extend spouts so many sound logic and empty beautiful words which should be kept to a minimum in fictional stories. Until this post is written, there’s no mention of any battle system yet, but I think it shouldn’t be that hard to employ Baldr battle system into this one in order to enrich the experience.
So as dessert, are there any material, anime, manga, or anything else you want to see being adapted into VN eroge format? A game is not preferrable since it’s already quite close to eroge VN format, but fine if you insist. Write in comment the material and how do you want it goes in eroge format. And I will be disappearing within three days, so take your time.

This has in fact been done at least once before; someone, for some reason, made a Dokuro-chan VN for the PlayStation. I haven’t tried it, so I can’t say anything about its success, but I thought I’d let you know. Hopefully they do a really good job here. I’m looking forward to it.
Having an all-ages adaptation is not all that rare, yes. I did forgot about that. But having an R-18 adaptation is a super-rare one. And one other thing, an all-ages VN adaptation from anime/manga is usually just as much half-baked adaptation like the anime adaptation from manga/game, so I’d rather to dismiss things that fit into that category.
Re-adaptation from R-18 to all-ages is somewhat acceptable but still feels lacking because we know what we’re missing out. So I guess it’s true that once we step into ‘this’ side, we will never look at the other side the same as before. lol
So yeah, a little bit confusing but in my argumentation, I use VN term, but for material I want you guys to think of something to be adapted into is for eroge. I’ll have to fix that in my post.
Ya, I was gonna say that all-ages VN adaptations have been done on numerous occasions for popular anime in particular. And of course, there’s all those mini-game style ones for K-ON, Lucky Star, etc.
This is definitely different since once you start making things 18+, you’re opening a Pandora’s box. On the one hand, you will bring in those that are interested in a more fleshed out story. But there may be some who screams blasphemy at the thought (or sight) of the characters getting to know each other better. Come to think of it, this kind of always happens when a product moves from one medium to another. (What is this feeling I have while waiting for Oreimo anime…?)
Speaking of Oreimo, I’d like an Oreimo eroge, if not VN. Also, a second version of true tears using the anime characters, SO THAT THERE CAN BE THE TRUE END!!!!!!! Ahem.
Enjoy your extended stay away from the internet! I’m without my desktop for the next few days, so I’m gonna go enjoy the vuvuzela concert.
I agree that the problem with anime is its length constraint, the problem(?) with eroge is the lack of animation. Adaption allows us to see the best of two worlds, as long as we see only the good parts.
Hm, I wouldn’t say the magic of reverse adaption is a new one though. Alot of the doujin games adopt this method to increase publicity/interest so I would say no to the revolution. Granted, to eroge industry this is a fresh thing.
“Get it while its hot…main dish…dessert” so many food references in this post makes me hungry. Good luck in the workforce, keep keeping things in moderation!
